I personally enjoyed reading all of the essays; however, the one that stuck out to me the most was “Everyday Struggles” by Juan Pena. The writing was very vivid and in addition to that it was a very realistic story. The title, “Everyday Struggles” fit the entire essay because no matter whom you are or where you come from, it can be very easy to get caught up in a certain lifestyle, some for the better, while others for the worst. In this situation, the writer [Juan Pena] was able to overcome being affiliated with the negative lifestyle and continue in a positive manner trying to be a support system for his friend [Steve].
This writing appealed to me because in my environment so many people “took the easy way out” and didn’t go as far as they could have in life. Weak individuals easily give into peer pressure and feel that there is a need to have “protection” from the gangs. The difficulties that Pena had to overcome was a significant story that many of us [teenagers] have to deal with and can relate to when it comes to choosing a clique or club over friendship.
